Heat the oil in a large pot over medium heat. If you're camping, use a portable stove or heat over the campfire until the oil is hot and shimmering.
Add the rinsed lentils to the pot and stir for about 1 minute until they are lightly coated in oil and fragrant.
Pour in the water or vegetable broth and add the salt, curry powder, cumin, and turmeric. Stir well to combine all the ingredients.
Increase the heat to high and bring the mixture to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and cover the pot, simmering for about 20-25 minutes, or until the lentils are tender and the soup has thickened slightly. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking, and add more water if necessary to reach your desired consistency.
Taste the soup and adjust seasoning if needed. You can add more salt or spices according to your preference.
Once done, take the pot off the heat and let it sit for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your warming soup right out of the pot or in bowls.
